Making Magic: Woodland Wedding Inspiration
When I was first making botanically-dyed ribbon, I was also still working with flowers for weddings and events in Portland. Just this morning, I randomly came across this beautiful, fairytale-inspired shoot I did with the very talented photographer Marcela Pulido in the woods behind a lovely wedding venue, The Barn, in the countryside south of the city.
I haven't thought about it in ages, but the images brought back memories of working with those wind-fallen branches to make a natural ceremony arch - actually almost a full circle, made entirely by winding the branches through one another and the tension between the trees. I remember I had had a rough idea of what I wanted to make before I got there but that it didn't really come to me until I was standing in the woods on the day.. and that I had forgotten to take gloves and tore my hands to pieces on the sharp wood while making it! Still, I was so happy with the way it turned out. And there is something of the fairytale in shedding a little blood to make magic, after all.
Almost all of the flowers from the bouquet came from my own garden - and gosh! that makes me long for a garden again.
I made the ribbon, of course, and also the silk chiffon that we used on the chair and with the wedding cake, for an elegant drape.
I've been thinking a lot about magic lately - I'm staying in Cairngorms National Park this month and quite frequently think how magical it is here - but also about the magic we are capable of making ourselves, if we want to. And how working with people you trust, together on the same creative project is genuinely one of the great pleasures a creative soul can share.
So just for the pleasure of it, here are some images from that lovely day. Please click through here for the full set from Marcela's site, and have a wander around her lovely domain while you're there. Clicks help us creative folk make a living.
